5 Practical Sales Tips to Make You a Better Closer

by Paul Howey @ Virtual Phone System for Business | Talkroute

    1. Listen & Respond If you happen to be on the phone with a potential lead, then one of the absolute most important points to remember is to be a good listener. This comes naturally to some people; others have to work really hard to stop themselves from constantly trying to “handle” the person with whom they are speaking and control the conversation—especially salespersons. This doesn’t mean that you have to become introverted and never assert what you want to say; it simply means that you have to listen to what someone is saying, and then give a helpful response, based on what they are telling you that they need.   2. Condemned by Google

by 6 @ Volacci Digital Marketing - Planet Drupal

There was an article recently on Forbes.com called "Condemned To Google Hell" about companies who have been banned from Google. If you just read the first few paragraphs, you might think to yourself that Google just arbitrarily baned their websites. But near the bottom, you read this: he admits that he tried gray-area tactics like buying links from more established sites to juice his traffic. and ...[the owner] thinks he can trace his problem to...replicated content on many of the site's pages, making them look like duplicate--that is, spam--content. I find the "I'm innocent! Oh, wait..." attitude these guys have interesting. Cheater shortcuts on relevant sites are still cheater shortcuts and you have a good chance of getting caught and banned... Black Hat SEO Explained

by 6 @ Volacci Digital Marketing - Planet Drupal

When it comes to SEO practices, you want to be as ethical as possible. You also want to rank as high as you can. Sometimes referred to as “search engine spamming”, black hat SEO techniques attempt to exploit the search engine rankings with keyword stuffing, illegal link building, and spam.

Although there is no concrete definition for “black hat SEO”, it is generally understood to be anything that would be considered an unethical practice of SEO. Funny thing is, ethics can be subjective, making black hat subjective. This results in the thought that there are varying shades of “hats” that exist. It is important to always use ethical practices.

Search engines differ in their standards for what are acceptable SEO practices. Some base it on how your practices impact others,... Read the full article: Black Hat SEO Explained

Why Your Customers Need to Know They’re Valued

by Paul Howey @ Virtual Phone System for Business | Talkroute

Businesses have a secret. It’s actually glaringly obvious, but they seem to act like it’s a secret because most hardly ever mention it—the big secret is that they can’t exist without their customers. Business owners and consumers alike all know this, so why not publicize it to earn some goodwill with your customers? This is why it works.   The Missed Opportunity Some businesses bring it up from time to time, saying that their customers are their “top priority”, or something to that effect; however, most businesses rarely mention this, if ever. Even if they do, it’s usually just a generic sentiment like, “You are important to us.” Few businesses go so far as to admit that their very existence depends on customers’ continued patronage. If you admit that you’re literally nothing without them, it’s an opportunity to show goodwill and appreciation toward your customers. People value honesty in ...

6 Signs that Your Business is Taking Over Your Life

by Paul Howey @ Virtual Phone System for Business | Talkroute

This is an article about not letting your work get the better of you; it’s about not losing yourself in your business, which can be detrimental to your well-being. Honestly, it is necessary sometimes to devote pretty much all of your time & energy to your business, at the expense of being involved in your own life. It’s when this becomes the norm and perpetuates itself as a permanent cycle that you should be concerned.   1. You literally only go home to sleep. This basically means that you spend just about your entire waking life at work. If it has gotten this extreme (which is not uncommon), then it’s time to seriously assess how your real life fits into your schedule.   2. Your family is sending you signals. When you have a family at home, they are your greatest allies because they have your back. So when ...

How to Spot a Well-Behaved SEO Firm in the Wild

by 6 @ Volacci Digital Marketing - Planet Drupal

Life can get crazy, especially in business. The old adage comes to mind: “It’s jungle out there.”– and, despite the “grandma-like” smell of this cliche, it’s very true. Companies can act like wild animals when they are trying to compete for new business - stopping just short of bringing raw meat to their sales pitch. When they do land you, they continue to promise you the oasis, but deliver a small pool of muddy water or, even worse, rancid, raw meat. Unfortunately, there are wild animals roaming freely in the SEO jungle.

If your brand or business needs an SEO campaign, you naturally want to avoid the SEO experts who run your campaign like wild animals, making unethical and high-risk decisions that have little chance of survival. It may seem like all sunshine and... Read the full article: How to Spot a Well-Behaved SEO Firm in the Wild

Black Hat Lies

by 6 @ Volacci Digital Marketing - Planet Drupal

In the world of Search Engine Optimization, just as there are in any industry, you have a wide range of morality and ethics being practiced by firms competing for your dollars. But in the world of SEO, we have terminology that encompasses this spectrum of do-gooders and evil-goers. The SEO firms that follow the rules, mind their P’s and Q’s, and will get your site ranked the legal way, are referred to as “White Hat” SEO firms. Think Gandalf, angel wings and The White Album. SEO firms that are manipulating Google with keyword stuffing, paid links, and invisible text are referred to as “Black Hat” SEO and implement practices that are highly frowned upon by the Google gods. Think Darth Vader, Worm Tongue, and the Wicked Witch of the West.

Why are black hat SEO firms still in... Read the full article: Black Hat Lies

Changing Your User Agent in Firefox

by 6 @ Volacci Digital Marketing - Planet Drupal

Say what? OK, this is a little advanced but it's kind of cool so I'm posting it. :-) The user agent is the fancy name for your browser. The reason that it is important is that it tells the web server what kind of browser you're using. Some sites actually will serve different files based on what your user agent is. For example, you Mac users (like me), have you ever been to a software site that offered you the Mac version to download without you having to tell it that you're on a Mac? That's because they detected your user agent. The search engine bots also use user agents. Here's a list: Google: Googlebot (Something like this: Googlebot/2.1 (+http://www.googlebot.com/bot.html)) Yahoo: Yahoo! Slurp (like this: Mozilla/5.0 (compatible; Yahoo! Slurp;... Protecting Your Marketing Investment: 5 Ways To Penguin Proof Your Website

by 29 @ Volacci Digital Marketing - Planet Drupal

On April 24th, Google implemented the Penguin update, a new update to the Panda algorithm. The Penguin update is an attempt to reward websites that are well-optimized and penalize sites that are over-optimized.

Officially, Google states that Penguin affected only 3.1% of queries in English. However, the sites that were hit saw large drops in their search rankings and traffic. Within hours of the implementation, “Penguined” sites saw drops in search engine traffic in excess of 70% and those with #1 rankings for major keywords no longer registered on the top 10 pages in Google.

Although our clients did not experience any drops due to the Penguin update, we have had several new clients sign up with... Read the full article: Protecting Your Marketing Investment: 5 Ways To Penguin Proof Your Website

How Search Engines and Shoppers Get Scammed

The internet is immense and very engaging. According to PEW Research Center for Internet & American Life Projects’ September 2009 survey of Internet User Demographics, 77 percent of total adults use the internet, and 73 percent of American adult internet users use the internet on a daily basis. It is quite baffling to think the amount of people surfing the web every day, and how many of them who are up to no good. As of today, there are only 16 shopping days left for Christmas, and if you are ordering online, that window is much narrower. As the Internet’s popularity for holiday shopping increases, so does the risk of getting taken advantage of identity theft. How Old & New Entrepreneurs Can Teach Each Other

by Paul Howey @ Virtual Phone System for Business | Talkroute

With a massive, multi-generational assortment of entrepreneurs existing today, who are running everything from the small businesses in your neighborhood, to vast corporations, it means there are all kinds of business owners who each have their own knowledge and experience to teach. To focus on two main categories of entrepreneurs, old-school owners who have been around for a while and owners from the new generation, these can both learn a thing or two from each other.   LESSONS FROM THE OLD GUARD   Customer service is paramount. There have always been companies that provided terrible service, but in earlier generations, the emphasis was on going the extra mile for a customer. In some cases, that would mean treating customers like family, and otherwise never stopping until they were satisfied, keeping ...

“Black Hat” Hackers Target Google Video

by 6 @ Volacci Digital Marketing - Planet Drupal

Internet security company and anti-virus software provider, Trend Micro, has sent a warning to users of Google Video that up to 400,000 search queries have been poisoned with irrelevant content by hackers that leads to malware virus sites. It is commonly acknowledged that the hackers are deliberately targeting Google’s reputation as a virus-free search engine. Hackers are using ‘black hat’ SEO tactics to artificially raise the profile of certain videos on Google Video. Once the video has been clicked, the site with the targeted video then redirects the users to install a new Flash Player which is supposedly required to play the video.

Once the malware is installed, the virus can spread to other computers via flash drives, external hard-drives, and other portable devices. Your... Read the full article: “Black Hat” Hackers Target Google Video

According to their official mission statement, the Federal Communications Commission is the government agency which “regulates interstate and international communications by radio, television, wire, satellite, and cable in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.” The FCC, established in 1934, is subject to Congressional oversight and is “responsible for implementing and enforcing America’s communications law and regulations.”   What does the FCC actually do? As you’ll see in this article, it is actually working behind the scenes of a number of different aspects of our daily communications. Here is the gist of it, in Blake’s own words: “Your parents, siblings, close friends and trusted coworkers will all chime in on your plans.
