How to Hire a SEO Company in Las Vegas

by JaySoriano @ SorianoMedia.com

Let’s get one thing out of the way… I am not selling you anything. There have been a few people contact me thinking they’d be an exception. You won’t be. I don’t do SEO consulting anymore. Why? Because the best can do it for themselves. Think about it. Now there are exceptions, but the problem is that SEO companies are usually good at selling SEO, but fairly mediocre in execution. This brings me to my first pro-tip: Pro-Tip #1: When hiring a SEO company/consultant, ask for a personal project where they’ve used SEO to generate $1000+/mo. This is the single most important tip I can give you. If you know someone, you can close this page now. The problem is, finding a companies that can show you that are few and far between. And the ones that you do find, probably aren’t in the budget you were expecting. If your a local business in Las Vegas, chances are you’ve been contacted almost daily from marketing or SEO companies offering you their business for pennies on the dollars promising you results that they won’t deliver. A lot of businesses when they think about investing in marketing/SEO, they’re thinking about saving pennies per day, and I’m thinking about value over a lifetime. It doesn’t make a difference if someone is charging $20/hr or $200/hr, you don’t want to pay someone to twiddle their thumbs. You want results. Pro-Tip #2: Pay for Performance SEO This is how I did business. Create a win/win situation. Though not many […]

HOW TO INCREASE SEO RANKINGS VIA SOCIAL MEDIA?

by emark @ eMarketing Hub

When search engines were first introduced, the algorithm for searches was cut-and-dried with a mechanical approach in order to achieve lucrative search engine rankings. As time went on, technology became more advanced and the present algorithm for search giant Google, apparently uses artificial intelligence techniques. However, a huge driving force behind this revamping of search technologies is the unconventional yet powerful, social media. Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn, which were originally passed off as “sites to network with friends” are now being used to influence organic search results. And why not? These ...

What Your About Page Should Be About

by Kirby Hopper @ seo.kirbyworks.net

Time for a quick quiz.   Website About pages should be about: The owner The company Both For a small company, one in which the owner is still guiding the ship, the answer should be primarily #1, the owner. The About page SHOULD NOT be another list of sales pitches, cliches, “we are the best because”, another explanation of what your company offers, or otherwise reiterate what’s already on your website. Those things are for your home page and other pages. Tell a Story Everyone loves a story.  Tell your audience a story about: How your product or service was created What gave birth to the “big idea” for your brand The people behind your company – including photos Why customers choose you, including some testimonials. Avoid industry jargon, business babble, stiff, safe copy, or sounding too formal. Make it real, make it personal, and be friendly. People want and appreciate simplicity and straight talk, not more sales pitches. Why Tell a Story? A story humanizes your brand. It provides context and meaning for your product. Stories make it easier to connect with your brand. Stories are more likely to get passed on. Your story will make you stand out from the pack. It gives you an opportunity to show some personality. Not only can you leave a lasting impression of your product but also of yourself. It’s easier to trust a real human being than a faceless company. A story relates what really motivates you, what your passion is, why you do what you do, not just what you do. Studies have shown that the About Us page is the second most visited page after the home page, and quite often the last page people visit.  Why not make it a good one?  If you have neglected your About page you are missing a great opportunity to present yourself in a different and refreshing way that may be just what your potential clients need to set you apart from the rest and make you their first choice of contact.

If “Content is King” How Does a Page With No Content Manage to Rank?

by Kirby Hopper @ seo.kirbyworks.net

You may have heard the phrase du jour in internet marketing circles: “Content is King”, and then ran across a home page that ranked well enough that you found it on Google’s first page of search results yet it didn’t have any content to speak of and wondered how that can be. What is that website’s secret sauce for being the exception to what Google has been advising for years regarding giving them good content, and the more the better?  How were they able impress Google enough to put your website in front of your intended audience? Content – Too Much for People, Not Enough for Google? You may have assessed your own thin content on your home page and decided to add paragraphs of text and then read somewhere that all that text is just going to lose your audience but figured if you don’t please Google first you’re not going to have any audience to lose in the first place so loaded up your front page with tons of information. What you may not have realized is that Google doesn’t expect all that great information to be on your home page. It’s just looking for links from your home page to your content, or links to topical pages or service offerings that in turn link to more pages about that topic or service. Your Home Page May Rank Better than Your More Relevant Interior Pages You may put a lot of effort into building up your service pages with links to and from relevant blog posts only to find that the page Google puts up in its results page is your home page, even though it’s rather thin on content regarding that topic, or any topic at all.  That’s because Google will defer to the home page figuring the information there provides a better idea of what your whole website is about compared with the one page or article that you have intentionally optimized for the keyword they are searching for. That also answers the question of why a home page with thin content can get ranked even though Google has said they don’t want to dish up thin content.  It’s the quality content on the interior pages that Google is looking for to get your site ranked but in many cases it’s the home page that they display on their results page. One reason Google may prefer a thin content home page to a more relevant and informative service page is because the home page has more authority. This is the page the majority of your inbound links are coming to so has more “votes”, so to speak, than an interior page. Your Topic or Service Page May Rank Better Than More Relevant Interior Pages Just as a home page may rank better than a service page for keywords that are more relevant to that service page a service page might rank better than a blog post that better targets that service keyword.  For example, I might have a blog post about “guaranteed ranking” but for that term my Guaranteed SEO service page will be the one Google dishes up for those searching for “guaranteed ranking”.  In fact, I have several blog posts about “guaranteed ranking” which all have an excerpt on my Guaranteed SEO service page so add to the content for that page.  By themselves they don’t have much authority for this topic but when linked to from Guaranteed SEO they each lend a little relevancy and authority to that page. Though those blog posts are more relevant to “guaranteed ranking,” the authority of Guaranteed SEO trumps that relevancy and becomes the favored page in the eyes of Google. How Does This Translate Into SEO Strategy? Keep these things in mind when designing your website: Content is King – but don’t put much of it on your home page. Your home page is for skimmers, not researchers.  They will only give you about two and one half seconds to figure out if your site is what they are looking for.  Don’t clutter it up. Create links to more detailed information through your navigation bar, blog post categories list, latest blog post titles and excerpts (or just titles to reduce clutter), latest Twitter feeds, or other methods to introduce featured or more in-depth content to draw your readers to, for those inclined to be researchers and not just skimmers. Divide your site content up in a way that makes sense, such as service pages for a service industry or product categories for ecommerce. Categorize your blog posts according to the way you have divided up your content in #4. For those individual content divisions you have created viz a viz #4, include blog post excerpts and/or titles (that link to the full post) from that category to increase that page’s authority on that topic.  If you are using WordPress or a similar Content Management System it’s easy to find a plugin that will generate excerpts according to whatever blog post categories you want to use for any given page.  For example, for my Guaranteed SEO page I have a short introduction to the topic followed by titles and excerpts from the last 20 blog posts I’ve written that I’ve assigned to the category of “guaranteed ranking”, which of course I could have categorized as “guaranteed seo” but had already picked “guaranteed ranking” as a blog category before I decided to improve my ranking for “guaranteed seo” and build a service category page around that topic. Organize your site structure in three tiers like this: www.homepage/service category page/detailed post.  For some industries it might make good sense to use 4 tiers like this: www.homepage/service category page/detailed page or post/more detailed post.  Here’s an example: www.seattlelawoffice/personal-injury/nursing-home-abuse or alternatively: www.seattlelawoffice/service-areas/personal-injury/nursing-home-abuse or even www.seattlelawoffice/service-areas/personal-injury/nursing-home-abuse/local-nursing-homes-sued-for-abuse.  Notice that last one is a 5 tiered architecture which is pushing it.  I definitely wouldn’t use more than 5 tiers and use a 5th tier only for supporting documents that are not exactly on-topic but relate […]

Review of BrandRep (Brand Local)

by Kirby Hopper @ seo.kirbyworks.net

Typical Ignorant, Lying Telephone Solicitor I don’t do telephone cold calling but if I did and you got a call from me you wouldn’t get a telephone solicitor who claims to have four years of internet marketing experience but doesn’t know the difference between organic and paid listings on Google. Nor will you get one who will ask you to answer questions like how long you’ve been in business to see if Google will “qualify” you for placement on the first page of their search results. Google doesn’t do that.  It’s just competitive bidding; Google doesn’t care how long you’ve been in business.  You also won’t get one who won’t give you a straight answer when you ask for our website address.  I won’t be telling you what city we’re in so you can see if you can find it with Google for a search term like “brand local irvine ca”.  Seriously, this is what I had to do to do a little research into BrandRep while on the phone with the solicitor. And why was he calling his company Brand Local when it’s not Brand Local, it’s BrandRep?  What was he hiding? Why We Get This Kind of Telephone Salesman I realize telephone solicitors aren’t experts in their field.  They aren’t paid enough for that.  It’s a numbers game: more calls equals more customers.  If you have x number of dollars to spend on calls you’re going to get more calls and thus more customers if you can hire more callers. The less you pay your callers the more of them you can hire for the same dollar. It’s simple math. Except for several variables: the quality of the leads and the quality of the salesman. If all you can do is give a salesman a list of random, busy business owners to call, and most of them have no interest in what you have to offer, that is, they aren’t what we call qualified leads, then sure, you’re salesman’s objective is to get as many calls in by the end of the day as possible in hopes he can find the few low hanging fruit that are either 1) ignorant of internet marketing and will believe anything you say, or 2) are desperate for something, ANYTHING, to try to get more customers. There’s no point in spending money on a real good salesman, one that you or I might actually want to talk to, if he’s going to spend most of his time sifting through all the unqualified leads who have no real interest in what’s being sold. If an SEO company wants to hire a good salesman then they need to provide him with good leads, like the kind that are actually using Google to search for internet marketing services. Now there’s a concept, actually practicing what you preach and get your SEO business by doing SEO. Speaking of which, according to Alexa, BrandRep only gets 15% of their website traffic from organic search and less than 2% of that is for something other than people searching using branded keywords like “brand rep” or “brandrep”, like you probably did to find this review.  In other words, they are an SEO company that can’t be found with Google. Did the Sales Manager do any Better? I will say that after I was turned over to a sales manager I got a really nice young fellow who actually listened to my questions.  That’s a rarity among these cold-calling companies. Most of them have no interest in finding out what anybody really wants or needs. When I explained to the sales manager that the telephone solicitor claimed to have four years of experience as an internet marketer but didn’t know the difference between paid and organic search I thought I would have heard him apologize and admit they need to do a better job of training their people but all I got was, “I wouldn’t do that to you.”  Really?  You wouldn’t do that to me but you don’t care that the guy sitting next to you is doing it to about a hundred busy business owners every day? What Does BrandRep Have to Offer? If you look at their website, more lies and deception.  They have a string of logos just above the footer that includes The Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, CNN, ABC, and 60 Minutes.  Most companies that have that on their website also say, “As Seen On”, because they are actually a big enough deal to be featured or at least advertise on a major news network. Though they don’t come right out and say “As Seen On,” BrandRep is hoping your subconscious will assume they have been seen on these news media and thus think they are a big deal. It’s not lying, per se, but it is certainly deception.  Why else would they have a string of major news outlet logos on their website? OK, enough about their scammy marketing practices.  Let’s look at what they do. Pay-Per-Click (Adwords) Here’s the thing about hiring a company like this to manage your Adwords campaign.  They make it sound like you are getting a fantastic deal if they can get you placed for some keywords that they have chosen for you for one monthly flat rate.  “Unlimited clicks for one low flat rate.”  Sounds like a deal, right?  But do you know how much it would cost you to go straight to Google and bid for the same keywords?  You probably don’t, and these companies feed off your ignorance. While on the phone talking about keywords they have software that can tell them with a high degree of accuracy just how many people are searching for those keywords and how many of those will click on the ads and thus give them a reason to bill you.  If they are charging you a flat rate of say, $400 per month, it’s because they know they will only spend a fraction of that on your actual […]

Is Your Website Just Sitting Around Gathering Dust?

by Kirby Hopper @ seo.kirbyworks.net

Why not pull it out, dust it off, and put it out where your potential customers can find it?  Oh, right, it’s stored in some server in some dingy basement of some web hosting company in only God knows where.  So buried that Google doesn’t want to bother pulling it out without a little help from you, in the form of you paying for Google AdWords and adding to their $30 Billion annual AdWords revenue. That’s exactly how Google want it. They want you to spend your money on THEM to get your website in front of people. Yours isn’t the only website not getting discovered by people with money to spend on what you have to offer.  Have you ever noticed how many websites have the content you are searching for when you do a Google search?  The number is right there at the top of the results page and usually has anywhere from six to eight digits.  Millions of websites like yours – lost in some digital cavern rarely seeing the light of day. Ah but did you know most Google users skip right past those paid-for advertisings at the top of their results page and look for the ones that are at the top of the non-paid for (organic) search results?  Did you ever wonder how they got there? While running my painting business I wondered the same thing about painting companies that managed to outrank even the eight hundred pound gorillas of internet marketing: ServiceMagic, SuperMedia, and more recently Angies List.  So I emailed the ones who got the number one search engine organic result for terms like “Seattle painter,” and “Spokane painting” and asked them how they did it.  The answer: Search Engine Optimization, or SEO for short. Some, well, one actually, Shearer Painting in Seattle, did his own SEO, which takes a lot of hard work to get that coveted number one spot, while others paid for a website from an internet marketing company that included SEO.  Others already had a website and paid for a Search Engine Marketing company to do the work needed to get them to the top.  Some paying more than a thousand dollars per month for said service.  Ouch. Their results were encouraging though.  John Shearer said he receives 600 calls per year from just his well-placed website alone.  That sure beats the 60 calls I was getting per year from the $3000 I spent on ServiceMagic leads, newspaper and radio adds, and the like. SEO sounded like what I needed for my business so I set out to find SEO services and found a product I liked so much I bought the company. Well, not exactly.  I don’t have that kind of money to be able to buy a company like Victor Kiam could do after trying out a Remington shaver but what I can do is bring the SEO services to you in a way I would want them brought to me.  The way I wanted my SEO services was where technology enables a lower price point for me as a consumer rather than more profit for them.  Kind of the Wal-Mart approach I guess you could say. What I have done is teamed up with a large international SEO company that has successfully optimized thousands of websites.  I’m using their world-class technology platform to bring you their SEO services in an affordable package, just the way I would want it for myself.

What Is WordPress And How Does It Work?

by Kirby Hopper @ seo.kirbyworks.net

First, How a Website Works A website is a bunch of files filled with the contents of a website and coding called HTML and CSS (and others) that your browser (Internet Explorer, Chrome, etc.) reads to know how to put together a website. That coding includes things like box sizes, placement, types of borders, and font style, size and colors. When you call up a website by either typing the address in your browser’s address field or click on a link to it on another website or an email, that website’s server sends those files to your computer or smart phone and your browser reads the files and puts together a website for you to see according to the instructions given by the website designer in those files sent to you. Also included in the HTML and CSS coding can be scripts, little bits of instructions to your browser to move things around when you move your curser or pull in some information from another website. Notice how in this scenario your browser is doing a lot of work. This is called client-side scripting. A Content Management System is More Efficient A Content Management System like WordPress adds another dimension. Those files sent to your device can also include further instructions to do other things depending on what you (the client) does. If you click on a menu item, for example, instead of your computer asking the server to send out a page already sitting there just waiting for you to ask for it, a message is sent back to the server to pull together several pieces of information and construct a page to send back to your browser. Some of those pieces of information include different headers depending on what page you ask for, different footers, different sidebars, and different content to put in those sidebars depending on, well, anything the website designer wants to make it depend on. This is called server-side scripting because the server is put to work putting your website pages together for you to look at. There’s a big advantage to doing it this way if the website has a lot of information and that is your computer doesn’t get overloaded with work to do.  If the website has over 200 pages (like the one you are looking at) it doesn’t have to keep 200 copies of headers and footers. It may only need to store 2 or 3 footers and headers which are called up by the server according to instructions given it in accordance to what you as the client do in terms of what you click on. This is simply a more efficient way to create a webpage, particularly if the website has a lot of pictures, products, or blog posts. Not only that, it gives website owners and web designers a lot of flexibility because content can be added to what is displayed on your browser according to a ton of different variables, like which category of product the client wants to look at or pictures can be categorized by the website owner to make surfing easier. Content Management Systems Work Better for Website Owners and Designers Up until now we’ve been talking about website efficiency from your poor, overworked computer’s standpoint, but what about the website owner?  As the name implies, a Content Management System (CMS) is designed to better manage content and more specifically manage it in a dynamic way that serves the purposes of the website owner and end user. A static site, one that is just “parked” on the internet until the owner decides to spend a bunch of money to make a change, is not able to be easily changed to reflect changes in the website owner’s goals and product or service offerings.  CMS’s provide a website that can be updated on a daily (or as often as he wants) basis by the owner without knowing how to do any coding. In other words, it doesn’t take any web design knowledge at all to become a blogging maniac! Open Source Content Management Systems Are Developing Rapidly to Better Serve Website Owners Back around the turn of the century only website owners with big budgets could afford a CMS because everything had to be custom built by a web developer who knew more than HTML, the basic language of web design, such as PHP and Javascript. Today Open Source CMS’s such as WordPress, Joomla!, and Drupal bring the power of CMS’s to non-techies as website owners and to website designers who don’t know half a dozen coding languages.  Open Source is another way of saying no company has control of the source code so no company can erect an artificial barrier by saying, “We’ll let you use what we have here to build yourself a websites if you pay us a pretty penny.”  Though designers and developers can offer products and services for pay the basic building blocks are free and open to anyone.  This has allowed for a phenomenal rate of development and much of that development is geared toward making web design and ownership simpler and more efficient. As the rapid pace of development continues expect to see more and more websites designed using Open Source CMS’s.  WordPress stands to increase market share in website platforms more than others simply because it already has the biggest market share with about 20% of all websites and over half of CMS’s being built today using it as a platform.  Web designers such as myself go with the one that is the most successful because it will have the biggest selection of free and premium themes and plugins and it’s easier to find other designers who already know the platform. We also know it will be easier for our clients to get local help if they should need it in the future since the majority of local web developers understand and use WordPress.

There Are Now 1 Billion Websites, How Much Room is There for Growth?

by Kirby Hopper @ seo.kirbyworks.net

At just about 23 years since the first website, there are now one billion of them, and more cropping up every second. We crossed that milestone this month.  You can even watch them being added to the World Wide Web in real time. That’s about 1 website for every six people on the planet, but if you account for the fact that the one billion figure includes inactive websites that are just parked domains then really there is one website for every 24 people on the planet.  This leaves me to believe websites are a growth industry, and will be for some time.  It probably won’t take 23 years to get to two billion, maybe only ten years, but two billion still leaves a lot of room for growth. When will websites reach their saturation point, when every person and business who would get one has gotten one? That may be when there is one website for every person on earth, with businesses making up for individuals who never will get one.  That’s twenty four times more websites than what we have now, which should give website designers some hope they can make a living doing what they love for some time to come. I predict the next 23 years will bring five times as many websites as the first 23 years, and 23 years after that, 46 years from now, websites will have reached their saturation point and the only growth after that will be due to population increase.  If it takes 23 years for the number of websites in the world to increase by a factor of five then it will take the rest of the world 23 years to catch up to the saturation of websites we have now in the USA, which has five times more websites per capita than the current world average. What Needs To Happen to Get to That Point? Before everyone who might want to have a website gets a website the internet must reach every corner of the inhabitable earth. We might want to make an exception for Antarctica but they’ve had internet connection at the South Pole since 1998.  Right now only about half of the world’s population has access to the internet.  Google is working on the goal of taking the internet to the whole planet and with their resources they probably will before long. Their plan, called Project Loon, involves relay balloons in the stratosphere.  Those of us in the Search Engine Optimization business have a love/hate relationship with Google but we’ve got to love their efforts to expand the internet into all the world.

Why Rand is Wrong When He Says “Reputable SEO Firms Don’t Promise Guaranteed Search Engine Rankings”

by Kirby Hopper @ seo.kirbyworks.net

Anybody who is curious about the idea of guaranteed SEO can do a Google search and find a few companies that offer guaranteed results. You will also no doubt run into Rand Fishkin’s mug shot on the first or second page and his Moz blog post with the same title I’ve quoted in this article title. It’s enough to scare many a potential client away from the idea of buying from the others who are offering guaranteed ranking. No, I don’t mean Rand’s mug shot is scary. He has a fine mug shot. Better than mine some would say. What I’m referring to are his title and the post description that goes along with it: “From 1996 through to today, SEO scams have used “guaranteed rankings and traffic” as a slimy catchphrase to lure in gullible buyers with …” Now THAT’S scary. Scary enough to get you to read his article to which I hope to counter for the sake of those of us who do offer guaranteed rankings and really for the sake of the integrity of the SEO industry as a whole. Rand may think he’s doing his part to improve the industry but he’s unwittingly helping to keep our industry on the margins of respectability. I know that’s not what he’s trying to do, but that’s what he’s doing. For the sake of brevity I’m not going to quote the whole post but if you’d like to read it click here. So let’s put on our thinking caps and dive into Rand’s scary blog post and go through it point by point. These points don’t correspond to Rand’s numbered reasons because he makes more than one point for each of his numbered reasons. Point #1: Top Companies Virtually Never Use Guarantees as a Marketing Tactic. Notice the date of the post; it was written in 2008. 6 years ago in the SEO industry was back in the Bronze Age. A lot has happened since then. More marketing firms today are actually doing what any business should be doing to gain customers: speaking to their pain points. It’s what we learn to do in our marketing classes. Now that many businesses have tried SEO services and have gotten burned because the company promised them the moon but couldn’t deliver and yet kept charging them more money saying, “It takes time. Just keep paying,” only to find out after shelling out hundreds or even thousands of dollars the SEO company wasn’t doing anything for them at all and they were never going to get ranked. Ironically they were probably told in the beginning, “If anyone guarantees SEO services they are lying.” I get this from telemarketers all the time. So who’s being slimy, the SEO who hides behind the industry mantra of “nobody can guarantee rankings” so he can keep charging for his services even though he really sucks at it or is just a scammer or the one who says he won’t charge if he can’t deliver? If you say the former then you would be correct. The latter actually has integrity yet is the one who is branded by the prevailing thinking in the industry, including top figures like Rand Fishkin. The vast majority of SEO firms who contact me as a building contractor, especially the ones from India, have nothing of value to offer me yet when I press them about what type of guarantee they can offer me they say, “Nobody can do that.” So Mr. Fishkin, what has the industry gained by encouraging them to say this and offering the formidable authority of your name behind such sentiments? The scammers are actually using your line of thinking to lure in the gullible. See how that’s working? Point #2: SEO and Guarantees Have an Abominable History Well sure they do. So did the Japanese with American POW’s during World War 2. If I were to use that as justification for hatred of all Japanese people today I’d be considered quite the bigot. I’d be somewhat like the Serbians who still hate the Croatians for siding with Hitler two generations ago. Rand’s logic makes about as much sense as the Balkans. Sure, there have been abuses of “guaranteed SEO” but by those who had no intention of actually guaranteeing anything. We can’t use a broad brush to color all SEO’s who want to do the right thing. Some actually do honor their guarantees. Rand is saying in essence don’t do the right thing because of all the people who don’t do the right thing. He is saying the industry is hopeless and don’t try to fix it. The problem is he is part of the reason it seems hopeless because his blog post has caused many who are trying to fix the industry get smeared as “slimy.” Rand, please take note. Point #3 (Rand’s Reason #2): The Search Engines Expressly Warn Against It This is where I want to pull my hair out. No, the search engines DO NOT expressly warn against offering guarantees, yet almost everybody says they do. What Google warns against is implying a company has a special relationship with them and actually has some control over rankings. Google warns against advertising against guaranteeing rankings, as in, controlling those rankings. That’s the context of Google’s oft quoted Webmaster Guidelines article about guaranteeing rankings. Google wasn’t warning against companies that either won’t charge you or will give your money back if they can’t get you ranked. Why would they? The context of the article is as evident as the nose on my face. Please, everybody, stop taking Google’s statement out of context and applying it to reputable firms that do offer guarantees. Google wasn’t talking about offering a guarantee, per se. Here’s Google’s warning in their own words: Beware of SEOs that claim to guarantee rankings, allege a “special relationship” with Google, or advertise a “priority submit” to Google. There is no priority submit for Google. In fact, the only way to submit a […]

CSS Animations: The Present and Future of Web UI

by JaySoriano @ SorianoMedia.com

Long gone are the days of Flash animations dominating web pages. With the withdrawal of iOS support came a wave of widespread disinterest, and in turn, exploration for new solutions. Now designers, developers, and enthusiasts alike have ceased scrambling for simpler ways to include interactive animated elements into their web pages. Why’s that, exactly? What’s the go to answer for so many goal-oriented go-getters? What could possibly replace the flashy hole that Adobe’s infamous service left behind? Elementary, my dear Watson: CSS Animations. As an Austin SEO, you’d think the clients that approach me would have most of that lined up—especially hailing from such a tech savvy city—but more often than not, we find ourselves having to revamp entire UI frameworks before even starting any technical optimization campaigns. If you’re still scrambling for more efficacious solutions, this post should help break things down and get you started in the right direction. What’s Happening Now Created completely within CSS3 markup, these animations are easy to implement and they add a slick aesthetic appeal to any design. Not only that, but the added motion captures user attention, improves experience, and can even direct traffic on your site by indicating which elements are clickable. Basically, CSS animations allow you to alternate style configurations based on certain triggers, such as a mouse scrolling over the element.  Within the CSS, these animations are defined by rules describing the type of effect desired. This is accomplished via the @keyframes at-rule, which is essentially, where the starting […]

What’s the best articles length for SEO?

Have You Ever Been To Colorado?

by Kirby Hopper @ seo.kirbyworks.net

In 2006, the State of Colorado quadrupled its Tourism Department’s marketing budget, and saw the state’s profits from tourism reach record highs, which now continues year after year. This came after a decade of operating with a much smaller (occasionally non-existent) marketing budget, and results to match. So, the real question is: Why on earth did they wait through a decade of futility before cranking up their marketing spending again? The answer? I have no idea (other than sometimes government takes a while to act). Of course, we have the benefit of hindsight. We know that if they invest that money in the Tourism Department, a bunch more people will come and spend money in the state because it happened. But what good is hindsight — experience — if we never learn from it? We hear story after story, case study after case study, telling us marketing works if you just take that initial step of investment. This feels risky when it really isn’t. But it’s the idea that “what if it doesn’t work” that stops many business owners. You can’t think like that. Trust experience. Trust hindsight. Don’t let another nail-biting, brow-furrowing day go by. Because once you finally make that decision to market, you’ll look back and wonder why on earth you weren’t doing this all along. You know you’re going to market eventually, so let’s get your marketing rolling NOW, so you can enjoy the profits SOONER rather than later.

Don’t Buy AdWords from a Flat Rate Reseller Who Calls You On the Phone

by Kirby Hopper @ seo.kirbyworks.net

Over on a Google AdWords Community forum we were having a discussion about certified AdWords re-sellers in general and BrandRep in particular and Jon Gritton gave a response that was so good I thought I’d reprint the whole thing here: OK, let’s call a halt to the slanging match with some cold, hard facts: 1. Being a Google Certified Partner, on its own, means virtually nothing. Someone could start from scratch, have one of these badges within 4 months and be the worst AdWords consultant on the planet. The badge is a token of spend and exam qualification, exams that anyone with a good memory could pass after a week of study, it says absolutely nothing about how a company works or their operating policies. The GCP badge also only requires that one person in that company has passed these exams. So, if a company has 100 employees it could be that 99 of them have never sat an AdWords exam. 2. “Satisfied Customers” are largely irrelevant as well. If you need to employ someone to run your AdWords on your behalf you’re probably not in a good position to judge whether they are providing the best possible service. With the right business it’s relatively easy to return some profit and it’s very easy to get Ads showing on page #1 for such precise terms as “bradenton car stereos” – how can that term not be #1 for an Ad? There’s probably only one business on the entire planet for whom that search applies. The problem is that while these satisfied customers may be happy they’re being found, or even that their business has increased, that still doesn’t mean they’re being given good service. If I ran your AdWords Account for you and gave you $5000 every month as net profit, you’d be happy, right? How happy would you be if you found out that a properly run Account could give you $20000 for the same monthly spend? $50000? Throwing a handful of very specific terms into an Account is a common trick by agencies looking to make a fast buck. The client is happy because they can carry out searches – on search terms specified by the advertising company, of course – where their Ad appears high in the results. These “brand” terms are the easiest to get #1 and usually convert well with good click rates but they’re only a tiny fraction of what’s possible with a well-run Account. 3. As I – and many others – have said before, this sort of charging model is very inefficient for AdWords and is clearly designed to present the minimum workload for the company with maximum income. I could run this sort of company standing on my head with my eyes shut. Tell me your website and I’ll have 10 Keywords up and running in less than an hour and you’ll see your Ads in the #1 position – for the search terms I specify, of course. Can I have my $200 now please? I’m laughing because I now walk away. You’re paying me $200 a month to do nothing. All the reports I send you are automated, I never change the Keywords unless I’m really bored and because the terms I’ve used as Keywords are so rarely searched – I’m actually spending only a fraction of that $200, the rest is clear profit. I can cover my website with claims of “unlimited views” because I insist on only using CPC, which doesn’t charge for views (impressions) so I’m touting my own lack of tailored service – what if your company would benefit more from CPM advertising? – as a feature. I would always, always, always, recommend that anyone looking for help with online advertising seek a professional who will give them a proper Account management service. Yes, I’ve said it already, these “flat-fee”, quick-fix agencies will put you on the map and you may even make a profit, but they’re never going to work hard for you or give you the results that are possible with a well-run, properly managed advertising strategy. If your approach to your business is that this is “good enough” then I’m sure it will be, others who want to make the best business they can will look a little harder.

On My Radar Screen: Performance-Based SEO Pricing - seo.kirbyworks.net

On My Radar Screen: Performance-Based SEO Pricing - seo.kirbyworks.net

seo.kirbyworks.net

Performance-based SEO makes a lot of sense to me. What that is is not paying for “services”, such as how many backlinks acquired or how many keywords targeted but rather paying for how well the SEO campaign performs. If you have been getting emails or phone calls from overseas SEO companies the first thing they tell you is how much work they will do for you, and it’s really hard to get them to provide case studies of how all this work they have done for others is doing them any good, and even harder still to get an honest answer.  Why should you pay a single penny for 20 articles written and published every month or 50 backlinks to your website acquired each month if it doesn’t get your website ranked? That kind of SEO pricing makes about as much sense as paying a mechanic for how many times he turns a nut on your car rather than paying for having your car fixed. A lot of people have been burned who have bought SEO in that manner.  Being charged according to how well your SEO performs correlates much more strongly to what you will be getting out of it in terms of paying customers compared to how many this and how much of that an SEO company is doing for you, especially when they provide low-quality services. Getting Beyond Charging for The Number of Keywords Ranked In the past I have charged according to how well a website ranks for a certain percentage of the target keywords, usually 50 percent.  After a short initial period of two or three months if I couldn’t get a site ranked for half of the target keywords I just wouldn’t charge my monthly fee.  It only seems fair to me that if you don’t rank, you don’t pay. It also seems fair to me that if you rank well for low-volume keywords you shouldn’t have to pay as much as you would if you ranked well for high-volume keywords.  Higher-volume keywords typically bring in more business so you would naturally want to pay more for what benefits your business more.  That is what Return On Investment (ROI) is all about. How would that look in practice?  To make things simple, lets say there are ten keywords in your niche that have enough search volume to go after, which we’ll label “A” through “J” and their monthly keyword search volumes are as such: A=325, B=200, C=150, D=100, E=75, F=50, G=40, H=30, I =20, J=10 Total = 1000 searches per month Notice how the best 5 have a total search volume of 850 or 85% of the total while the other 5 have a total search volume of 150 per month, or 15%. With a performance-based pricing model we would charge more if we got a site ranked for higher volume keywords than if we got it ranked for lower volume keywords.  We might start out at $100 per month for getting any less than Google page 1 for keywords with under 200 searches per month, $200 per month for page 1 with keywords with 200 to 400 searches, $300 per month for keywords with 400 to 600 searches, and $400 per month for searches totaling more than 600 per month.  That 600 per month mark could be achieved with the best 3 which are A, B, and C since they total 675 searches or the 9 lowest volume keywords which are B through J which also total 675. Either way you are paying for search volume which correlates strongly with how much business your SEO campaign will be generating. This is an improvement over just charging for a site getting ranked for a certain number of keywords since not all keywords are created equal, which is an improvement over charging for services that may not get a site ranked at all. Performance-based SEO pricing gets pretty close to charging according to what a business really wants, which is their phone to ring or a new customer to walk through the door. For too long the SEO industry has been dominated by web geeks who have never run a business other than their SEO business.  They are all too impressed with their own snazzy ranking reports and laundry list of all the things they will do for their clients. It’s time to make SEO work for the business owner, not just the SEO. Performance-based SEO Brings the Advantages of SEO to The Small Business Who Needs It Most Lately I’ve been thinking about the new companies that don’t have an established clientele and thus don’t have the benefit of repeat business.  They are quite often the ones who have the most need for marketing yet spend the least.  Performance-based SEO makes marketing scale-able with a low cost of entry and increasing cost only if the business gets an increase of benefit from more exposure on the internet. It’s a pricing model that just makes sense from the consumer’s standpoint, and what makes sense for the consumer will ultimately benefit the SEO working on their behalf. For the small business who understands the value of marketing and has appropriated a budget for it they don’t want to have to dedicate much of it to finding something that works.  Invariably that is the way it is and end up spending a lot of that budget trying different marketing avenues only to find out what doesn’t work very well.  Performance-based SEO doesn’t drain much-needed capital before it gains traction and brings in paying customers like many other marketing methods. Performance-Based SEO Pricing Adds Complexity to the Sales Process As a pricing model performance-based SEO has one disadvantage: it’s harder to grasp from the prospective client’s point of view.  Selling SEO service according to the number of services performed is a standard pricing model in most every industry so most people can relate to it and it doesn’t need to be explained.  Any time you ad a degree of complexity you make it …
